GREENWOOD----After winning the first two games, the Catawba volleyball team had to battle Lander down to the final point in the best-of-five match to squeak out a 3-2 non-conference victory Tuesday night in Horne Arena. Catawba claimed a 30-26, 37-35, 33-35, 26-30, 15-13 win.
Catawba improves to 16-3 overall, while Lander drops to 11-5.
Lander's Melissa Trippany, a senior from Fort Myers, Fla., set a Peach Belt Conference record for digs with 47. Trippany also improved her career digs to 2131, just 117 shy of the PBC record held by Francis Marion's Jessica Strader (2003-06).
Sara Senn led Lander with 18 kills and 29 digs, while Kay Stewart totaled 19 kills, four solo blocks and four flock assists; and Andrea Griffin had 18 kills, two solo blocks and four block assists. Candace LaRocca totaled 61 assists and 24 digs, Kerri Sorensen 14 kills and one solo block, and Marina Camps recorded 13 digs.
Catawba was led by Melissa Powers (31 kills), Melissa Griffith (23 kills, 26 digs), Andi Henderson (83 assists, 13 digs), Nikki Bozick (32 digs), Mai Zoura Lo (16 kills, 29 digs) and Jasmine Chunn (10 kills, one solo block, four block assists).
