MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 10 Georgia College & State University baseball team maintained its hold on first in the Peach Belt Conference standings with a pair of wins Saturday afternoon over Lander, 12-2 and 13-2. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
GCSU improves to 34-9 overall and 17-4 in the PBC, while Lander falls to 15-28, 4-17.
GCSU pounded out a total of 27 hits over the doubleheader to create the 25 runs, including a pair of multi-hit games from designated hitter Brett DiFelice, who went 6-for-8 with three runs and five driven in.
In game one, the Bobcats plated 10 of their 12 runs in the fourth and fifth innings, including six in the fourth, all with two out. Justin Mills brought home half of those with a three-run blast to center. He finished the game 2-for-5 with five RBI and a run scored. Senior centerfielder Brandon Anderson was 3-for-4 with three singles.
Andy Reichard pitched six innings of shutout ball, with just four hits and five strikeouts to pick up the win. Evan Christian made it four innings for the Bearcats, allowing six runs, four earned.
Lander third baseman Jared Altus was the lone multi-hit performer for Lander, going 2-for-4 for the squad that had no extra-base hits.
In game two, the deciding inning was the fourth, when GCSU blew open a 2-2 game. Mills got the scoring started when he tripled home Nathan Martin, who reached on an error, and Chandler Snell, who singled.
Five of the Bobcat starters scored multiple runs in game two, including a pair by Snell, who finished 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Senior righty Matt Howard grabbed the win in relief, going 1 2/3 innings with just one hit and no runs.
Lander starter Daniel Hinchberger (5-5) gave up seven earned runs—eight overall—in his five innings of work. Catcher Eric Barrett was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and centerfielder T.J. Guinan managed a 2-for-3 game with a run.
