Lander gets the hits, but not enough runs in loss to GCSU

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Despite getting out-hit 14-6, the No. 10 Georgia College & State University baseball squad defeated Lander, 9-4, in Peach Belt Conference play at Kurtz Field tonight.

GCSU improves to 32-9 overall and 15-4 in the PBC, while Lander drops to 15-26, 4-15.

Bryan Shaughnessy was 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI, smacking a two-run home run to dead center in the third. Brandon Anderson finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, and freshman Andrew Evans added a pair of RBI.

The PBC's leading hitter, Lander first baseman Jesse Barbaro, went 5-for-5 with two RBI and a run, all five hits being singles.

Senior ace Michael Antonini shook off a rough start—four earned runs in the first two innings—to finish with six strong frames, striking out four and allowing four runs on eight hits. Lefty starter Derek Wilson went 5 2/3 in the loss, giving up nine runs with seven earned.

GCSU took the lead for good in the third, getting a leadoff triple by Anderson, who then scored on a passed ball, after a Bearcat error, Shaughnessy ripped his fourth home run of the season.

Bobcat reliever Matt Howard entered the game in the seventh with the bases loaded, putting the tying run on deck. Howard struck out the first batter he faced and forced the next into a double play to get out of the jam.

The two teams meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader.
