Wingate baseball squeaks past Lander, 2-1

GREENWOOD----The Lander baseball team lost a pitcher's duel to Wingate University Tuesday afternoon when the Bulldogs defeated the Bearcats, 2-1, in a non-conference game at Legion Field. Both teams were held to four hits.

Wingate improves to 20-25 overall, while Lander slips to 15-29.

The Bulldogs' Richard Allred (2-5) earned the victory as he struck out five, walked one and allowed just one run on four hits in eight innings pitched. Zak Laws was credited with the save, his sixth of the season.

Lander's Andy Quick (0-3) took the loss as he struck out three, walked three and allowed two runs (none earned) on two hits in six innings of work.

Wingate took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Nick Siega-Riz walked, stole second, then scored on a throwing error by Lander shortstop Brendan O'Connor.

The Bearcats tied the game in the bottom of the first when Jonathan Myers led off with a triple to right center and scored on Malcolm McLeod's RBI single to right field.

Wingate scored the winning run in the second when Grayson Tanner walked, advanced to second on a groundout, then scored on a throwing error by Lander third baseman Jared Altus.

For Lander, Myers went 2-for-4 with one triple and one double.
