Augusta State baseball defeats Lander, 8-2

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Lander baseball team's four-game winning streak came to an end Friday evening when they lost, 8-2, to Augusta State in a Peach Belt Conference game at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Augusta State improves to 15-5 overall and 4-3 in the PBC, while Lander drops to 8-13, 2-8.

Augusta's Trey Williams went the distance pitching the full nine innings grabbing the win for ASU. He struck out nine batters and only gave up two runs on four hits, making him 2-0 for the season. Derek Wilson got the loss for the Bearcats, dropping to 0-5 on the year.

Lander jumped on top in the first, scoring a run on a double by Danny Morgan. ASU answered back in the bottom of the third when short stop Bennett Mayfield reached on an error and Tim Rawlings doubled to left field, advancing Mayfield to third. Freshman Shannon Wilkerson stepped up to the plate and hit a single up the middle scoring Mayfield and Rawlings, Wilkerson then scored on a sac-fly by Kevin Kelley, jumping the Jags ahead 3-1. Lander and ASU both put runs across in the sixth inning, and ASU again scored in the eighth.

Wilkerson led the Jags offensively hitting 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs. For the Bearcats, Jonathan Myers, Malcolm McLeod and Gabe McCann were all 1-for-4 and Morgan was 1-for-1.

Lander and ASU are back in action tomorrow, March 10, finishing the PBC series with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
