GREENWOOD - Danny Morgan and Jesse Barbaro hit back-to-back homers in the eighth inning, lifting the Lander Bearcats to a 3-1 Peach Belt Conference victory over UNC Pembroke Sunday afternoon at Legion Field.
Lander improved to 6-12 overall and 2-7 in the Peach Belt. The Braves fell to 12-7, 2-7. The Bearcats won the three-game series after splitting a double-header on Saturday.
Lander trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the eighth against UNC Pembroke starter Cody Crotts and had only three hits. Pinch hitter Malcolm McLeod hit a leadoff single but was picked off. However, Jonathan Myers got some momentum back for the Bearcats with a double to deep left. Morgan gave Lander the lead by lining a two-run homer over the fence in left-center. Barbaro followed with a towering homer to right. The four straight hits knocked Crotts out of the game.
Justin Altman (3-1) retired UNCP in order in the ninth and earned the win for the Bearcats with two innings of shutout relief. Crotts (2-1) took the loss.
Lander starter Daniel Hinchberger dominated the first five innings, striking out 10 batters while allowing only two hits. But the righty hit a wild streak in the sixth when he hit a batter and walked two to load the bases with one out. Hinchberger got out of the jam when Adam Hamrick flew out to right fielder Morgan, who gunned down Derek Funk at the plate to end the inning.
Pembroke loaded the bases again in the seventh and, this time, broke through with a run. Jay Bowman hit a lead off single and after two walks, Kevin Dietrich's two-out infield single scored what would prove to be Pembroke's only run of the game.
Hinchberger allowed one run on four hits in seven innings of work. He struck out 10 and walked five.
Dietrich and Bowman had two hits apiece to lead UNCP while Morgan paced Lander with two RBI.
