Hinchberger strikes out 11 in 9-2 win over Erskine

GREENWOOD----Lander's Daniel Hinchberger made his first start a memorable one as the six-foot, seven-inch, right-handed pitcher struck out 11 batters and allowed just one hit in six innings Tuesday afternoon to lead the Bearcats to a 9-2 non-conference victory over Erskine College at Legion Field.

The Bearcats gave first-year head coach Chris Moore his first career victory as the Bearcats improve to 1-2 on the season. Erskine drops to 2-1.

Erskine's Russell Reid took the loss, striking out three, walking one and allowing five earned runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings.

Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jonathan Myers, who singled, went to second on Malcolm McLeod's single and stole third on Jesse Barbaro's strikeout. Myers then scored on Danny Morgan's pop fly to first base.

Lander extended the lead to 3-0 in the second inning when T.J. Guinan stroked an RBI double that scored Chris Munn and Justin King singled in Guinan.

The Bearcats increased the lead to 4-0 in the third inning when Barbaro doubled then went home on a Munn's RBI single. Brooks Arnette made it 5-0 when he stole home when McLeod was at bat.

Lander made it 7-0 in the fifth when Guinan and Munn scored on Ruoss Hunter's double to right field.

Erskine then cut the margin to 7-1 in the seventh inning. Justin Altman, Hinchberger's reliever, walked the first three batters then sent Bryan Fogle home on a wild pitch.

Barbaro homered to left field in the seventh to give the Bearcats an 8-1 advantage. Fogle followed with a homer of his own in the eighth for the Fleet's second run.

For Lander, Barbaro went 3-for-5 with one homer, one double, three runs scored and one RBI. Other Bearcat leading hitters were Guinan (2-for-4, one double, one RBI), Ruoss (1-for-3, one double, one RBI), and Munn (2-for-3, one RBI).
