GREENWOOD---The Lander baseball team avenged Tuesday night's loss at Mars Hill College by defeating the Lions, 7-2, Wednesday in a non-conference game at Legion Field.
Lander improves to 4-11 overall, while Mars Hill slips to 4-14.
The Bearcats' Justin Altman (3-1) earned the victory, striking out five, walking three and allowing two earned runs on four hits in five innings pitched. Mars Hill's Adam Atkinson (0-3) suffered the loss, striking out two and allowing four earned runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings.
Lander grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning when T.J. Guinan scored on Nate Mangiapane's RBI single.
Mars Hill came back in the third to take a 2-1 advantage. Jonathan Helsabeck walked, advanced to second on David DeSilva's single and scored on an error by the second baseman. DeSilva made it to 2-0 when he scored on Brian Williams' sacrifice fly.
It was all Lander from there.
The Bearcats tied the game 2-2 in the third when Jonathan Myers singled, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out then stole home. The Bearcats made it 3-2 in the fourth when Guinan scored on Malcolm McLeod's RBI single, and Lander stretched the margin to 4-2 in the sixth when Munn doubled then scored on McLeod's RBI single.
Lander added three runs in the seventh.
For Lander, Munn went 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run scored and one RBI; and Guinan was 2-for-3 with one double and two runs scored. Barbaro went 3-for-4 with one run and Malcolm McLeod was 2-for-4.
For Mars Hill, DeSilva went 2-for-4 with one run and Boehme was 2-for-4.
