SPARTANBURG----The Lander men's basketball team placed four players in double figures Wednesday night and clinched the Peach Belt Conference's North Division title when the Bearcats defeated USC Upstate, 67-66, in the Hodge Center.
Lander improves to 16-10 overall and 9-6 in the PBC, while Upstate drops to 16-10, 8-7. As the North Division champion, Lander will enter next week's PBC tournament as one of the No. 1 seeds.
Michael Griffin led the Bearcats with 15 points, while Jason Davis added 14, Zach Evans 11 and Jarred Jackson 10. Jackson, Emanuel Hodrea and Scottie Smith had five rebounds each.
Luke Payne led the Spartans with a game-high 24 points, while Daniel Quinlan scored 17 and Ante Pikunic 11. Pikunic also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Lander, which led 33-29 at halftime, connected on 24-of-50 field goals for 48 percent, 8-of-19 three pointers for 42.1 percent and 11-of-14 free throws for 78.6 percent.
Upstate made 24-of-55 field goals for 43.6 percent, 5-of-13 three pointers for 38.5 percent and 13-of-15 free throws for 86.7 percent.
