CHARLOTTE, N.C.----The Queens University men's basketball team outscored Lander 13-9 in the overtime period Sunday night to defeat the Bearcats, 81-77, in the championship game of the Royals' Holiday Classic.
Lander drops to 4-5 overall.
Houston Wright scored a game-high 31 points to lead the Bearcats. Wright connected on 13-of-17 field goals, including 5-of-7 three-point shots. He also made 8-of-10 free throws, including six in the final two minutes of regulation. Lander rallied back from a 66-57 deficit with 2:05 remaining and tied the game, 68-68, with six seconds left on a Zach Evans field goal.
Evans added 13 points for Lander, while Ford "Scooter" Lawrence netted 11 points and Dane Sparrow grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
John Thompson led Queens with a double-double, 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Darnell Evans added 19 points, Reggie Hopkins 12 and Lamont King nine points and seven rebounds.
Lander made 17-of-42 two-point shots for 40.3 percent, 10-of-25 three pointers for 40 percent and 13-of-21 free throws for 61.9 percent.
Queens, which led 29-27 at halftime, made 14-of-44 two-point shots for 36.5 percent, 9-of-19 three pointers for 47.4 percent and 26-of-39 free throws for 66.7 percent.
