Women’s soccer advances in Peach Belt Tournament

GREENWOOD----Stacey Copeland scored one goal and added one assist Tuesday afternoon to lead the No. 3-seeded Lander women's soccer team to a 2-0 Peach Belt Conference tournament victory over sixth-seeded UNC Pembroke. Lander advances to Friday's semifinals at a yet to be determined site.

The Lady Bearcats improve to 13-4 overall, while UNCP falls to 12-6-1. The 13 victories is a single-season record for Lander, which began a soccer team in 1998. The previous best season was nine wins in 1999.

Copeland scored her first goal at 47:25 on an unassisted goal to give the Lady Bearcats a 1-0 lead.

Valarie Smith scored Lander's second goal at 58:58 on an assist from Copeland.

Lander outshot UNCP, 14-12, and led in corner kicks, 5-3.

Lander goalkeeper Rachael Hine recorded five saves, while UNCP's Whitney Beverly had three.
