MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia - Georgia College & State University won the rubbergame of a three game Peach Belt Conference baseball series against Lander University with an 11-3 victory Monday afternoon at John Kurtz Field.
GCSU (34-7, 13-5 PBC), ranked No. 2 in the latest Collegiate Baseball Magazine NCAA Division II Poll, pounded out 15 hits to take the series 2-1.
The Bobcats jumped on Lander (25-16, 8-10 PBC) starting pitcher Jake Hover for four runs in the first inning. Brandon Anderson started the scoring with an RBI single to bring home Justin Mills. Mike DeVeaux added a two-run double, and he later scored on Casey Cullen's RBI single for a 4-0 lead. GCSU added three more runs in the second inning. Hans Stancil delivered an RBI single, and Anderson brought home Mills again with a sacrifice fly.
Stancil would later steal home to give the Bobcats a 7-0 lead. Stancil picked up the scoring again in the fourth inning with a solo home run and then added an RBI single in the fifth inning to give GCSU a 9-0
lead. The Bobcats got their final runs of the day in the sixth inning as Tripp Burt walked with the bases loaded, and Rich Janofsky tacked on an RBI single for an 11-0 lead.
Lander scored all three of its runs with two outs in the ninth inning as Justin King walked with the bases loaded, and Chris Munn followed with a two run pinch-hit double for the final 11-3 margin.
Wes Sorrells (4-0) pitched five shutout innings, allowing only three hits with four strikeouts and three walks to earn the win on the mound for the Bobcats. Hover (2-4) took the loss for Lander after allowing eight runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and three walks in four innings.
Stancil finished 3-for-4 with three RBI, while DeVeaux had a perfect 4-for-4 day with two RBI, and Mills was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored to lead GCSU at the plate. Cullen also had a good day at the plate after going 3-for-5 with one RBI. Malcolm McLeod went 2-for-3 to lead Lander.
