DUE WEST----The Lander baseball team won its fifth straight game Tuesday afternoon when the Bearcats pounded out 12 hits in a 5-3 upset against No. 29 Erskine.
Lander improves to 12-5 overall, while Erskine drops to 17-3. The victory avenges an earlier 10-3 loss to the Flying Fleet this season.
Chris Munn earned the victory in relief for Lander, striking out one, and allowing just one earned run on one hit in 2.1 innings pitched. Derek Wilson started the game and went 5.2 innings, striking out six, walking three and allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits. Brad Hay was credited with the save.
Erskine's Michael Maus took the loss in just one-third of an inning pitched.
Kevin Jones scored on James Compo's RBI single in the seventh inning to snap a 2-2 tie, then Ryan Brisby's eighth-inning, solo homerun gave Lander a 4-2 advantage. After Erskine cut the margin to 4-3 in the eighth, Lander made it 5-3 in the ninth when Radley Raven scored an unearned run on James Compo's RBI single.
Lander took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Jonathan Myers scored on Jesse Barbaro's sacrifice fly and Raven scored on Compo's first RBI single.
Compo went 4-for-5 with three RBI, while Myers went 3-for-4 with one run scored. Jones was 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Erskine's Robbie Knapp (2-for-5) and Wesley Burgess (2-for-4) both homered for the Flying Fleet. Robbie Knapp went 2-for-5 with one double, one run scored and one RBI.
