Lander baseball rallies for 11-10 win over Wingate

WINGATE, N.C.----The Lander University baseball team scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning Tuesday and survived for an 11-10 NCAA Division II victory over host Wingate University at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field on the Wingate campus.

With the win, Lander improves to 22-11 overall. Wingate is 12-27 overall.

Lander scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to turn an 8-4 deficit into an 11-8 edge. The Bearcats took advantage of four hits and two Wingate errors to take the lead. The big hit for the visitors was a three-run homer by freshman outfielder Gabe McCann.

Wingate took an 8-4 lead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Henley started the sixth frame with an infield single and a stolen base. Bulldog junior second baseman Shaughn Neal added another infield hit to put runners on the corners.

Bulldog junior outfielder Brent “Bruiser” Simpson hit a RBI fielder's choice grounder to third. The throw home to get Henley was late as Neal moved to third. On the next pitch, Wingate junior first baseman Jay Barnes hit a three-run homer to right field to give the hosts an 8-4 lead.

Two Wingate players had perfect nights at the plate. Barnes was five-for-five with a double, a home run and five RBI. Freshman outfielder Jerome Henley was four-for-four with two runs scored, one stolen base and one outfield assist. Henley was making his second collegiate start. Barnes and Henley had nine of Wingate's 15 hits.

For Lander, five players had multiple hits. Bearcat sophomore second baseman Jared Altus was three-for-six with one RBI. Sophomore designated hitter Justin King was three-for-four with one RBI.

Bearcat freshman first baseman Jesse Barbaro hit a two-run homer to right-center field in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 2-2. Barbaro was two-for-four with a home run and three RBI.

The two teams combined for 21 runs on 28 hits. Lander had 13 hits, while Wingate tallied 15 hits. Both teams left 11 runners on base.
