Baseball pounds out 18 hits in win over Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C.----The Lander baseball team avenged its season-opening loss to Lenoir-Rhyne when the Bearcats pounded out 18 hits Tuesday in a 13-7 non-conference victory over the Bears at Bears Field.

Lander improves to 17-7 overall, while L-R drops to 13-14.

Lander, which had four players tally three or more hits in the contest, was led by James Campo and Kevin Davis.  Campo finished four-for-five with two runs scored and an RBI while Davis tallied three hits, three runs scored and a game-high three runs batted in.

The Bearcats took control with five runs in the top of the fourth inning thanks to two-run singles by Davis and Jared Altus or a 5-1 advantage.

Lander's lead never got below two runs for the remainder of the contest and the Bearcats put the game away with three runs in the seventh and eighth innings for an insurmountable 13-4 lead.

The Bearcats scored three unearned runs in the seventh while Compo, Davis and Gabe McCann added run-scoring hits in the top of the eighth inning.

Lenoir-Rhyne, which committed six errors in the game and gave up five unearned runs, was led offensively by senior centerfielder Matt Wiley, who finished with two hits, a home run and a game-high three RBI.

Lander's Brad Hay improved to 3-1 after pitching the final five and two-third innings while L-R sophomore Jesse Beane fell to 0-1 with the loss.

Lander hosts Anderson at 6 p.m., Thursday at Legion Field.
