Lander defeats Bloomsburg in Spring Break Classic

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Chris Munn pitched a four-hitter and Justin King ended the game with a two-run homer, lifting the Lander Bearcats to a 12-1 victory over Bloomsburg Saturday afternoon at the Lander Spring Break Tournament at Legion Field.

Lander won its seventh straight and improved to 15-6 going into Saturday night's game versus Lincoln Memorial. Bloomsburg fell to 2-6.

The Bearcats led 8-1 going into the bottom of the seventh and needed three runs to end the game by the 10-run rule. Gabe McCann scored on a passed ball, Radley Raven singled to make it 10-1, and King launched his first homer of the season over the left-field fence.

Lander out-hit the Huskies 18-4 with Adam Hutchins, Kevin Davis and Gabe McCann each going 3-for-4. Hutchins and Davis had two RBI apiece while McCann scored three runs. Jordan Jones and Jonathan Myers each went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Raven was 2-for-5 with an RBI, and King went 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Syril Kress, Matt Robinson, Chris Brown and Rob Watlock each had hits for Bloomsburg.

Lander took a 2-0 lead in the first with the help of two hits, two walks, and an error. The first run scored when Bloomsburg's left fielder dropped a fly ball. Davis singled home the second run.

The Bearcats upped the lead to 3-0 in the second when Kevin Jones reached on a bunt single, moved to third on Jesse Barbaro's bloop double down the left-field line, and scored on a single by Hutchins.

Lander doubled its lead to 6-0 in the third. Davis and McCann singled and Ryan Brisby walked to load the bases. Two runs scored when Jordan Jones reached on a fielder's choice and advanced on an errant throw by the second baseman. Myers singled home the third run.

The Bearcats continued to chip away, adding a single run in the fourth when Hutchins doubled over the center fielder's head and scored on Davis' third hit of the game to make it 7-0.

Lander scored once more in the fifth when McCann reached on a bunt single, stole second, moved to third on an infield hit by Jordan Jones, and scored while Jones was caught stealing second.

Nick Lerch scored Bloomsburg's only run in the top of the seventh before the Bearcats ended it with three runs in the bottom half.

Munn (5-1) pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits while walking three and striking out eight. Lander reliever Matt Conyers retired the final batter.
