GREENWOOD----The Lenoir-Rhyne College baseball team spoiled the Bill Jarman Era opener Wednesday night when the Bears defeated Lander, 4-3, in a non-conference game at Legion Field.
Lenoir-Rhyne opens the season at 1-0, while Lander is 0-1.
Jesse Jordan (1-0) earned the victory for Lenoir-Rhyne, striking out four, walking three and allowing one run on four hits in 7.1 innings pitched. Bobby Kennett was awarded the save, striking out three, walking one and allowing two runs on one hit in 1.2 innings.
Lander's David Glover (0-1) took the loss, striking out two, walking two and allowing two runs on four hits in five full innings.
The Bears took a 1-0 run in the first inning and stretched the margin to 2-0 in the fourth. Lander closed the gap to 2-1 in the seventh, but L-R came back with two more runs in the ninth. Lander mustered up a two-out, two-run rally in the ninth to cut the margin to one run.
For L-R, Jordan Ackley went 1-for-5 with one triple and one run scored, while John Pugh (1-for-5, one run scored) and Derek Pugh (1-for-4, one RBI) both doubled. Taylor McCurdy went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Lander's Malcolm McCleod went 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, while Radley Raven, Jesse Barbaro, Adam Hutchins and Gabe McCann also collected singles. James Compo had one run scored and one RBI.
The Bears out hit Lander, 7-5. Lander committed three errors and L-R had two.
