Ponds, Good pace Lady Bearcats past Flying Fleet, 99-67

GREENWOOD – Tiara Good and Stephanie Ponds scored 22 points apiece, leading Lander to a 99-67 victory over Erskine Monday night in a non-conference women's basketball game at Horne Arena.

Good fell just shy of a triple-double with 10 rebounds and eight assists before leaving the game with more than eight minutes left. She completed her double-double with her 10th rebound with more than 13 minutes remaining in the game.

Lander improved to 4-2 overall and took a 34-17 lead in the all-time series. The Lady Fleet fell to 1-3.

Bryony Crouch added 18 points for Lander, April McClendon scored 10 points, Keyattah Norman had eight points and 10 rebounds, and Ponds added four blocked shots. The Lady Bearcats shot 49 percent from the floor, 45 percent from behind the 3-point arc, and 93 percent from the free-throw line while having 51-38 rebounding edge.

Audrey Timmerman led Erskine with 15 points, Chris Pack added 11 points, Kristy Vaughn had 10 points and nine rebounds, and Lisa Jackson had eight points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Each team hit nine 3-pointers with 15 of the game's 18 treys coming in the first half when Lander made 8-of-15 and the Lady Fleet 7-of-13.

Lander took control in the first half with runs of 18-2 and 12-2. The first run came with the Lady Bearcats trailing 6-3. Crouch and Jasmine Collier each hit a pair of 3-pointers and Good scored twice during the 18-2 run that pushed Lander to a 21-8 lead.

After Erskine scored five unanswered points to pull within 21-13, Ponds scored four points and Collier and Crouch hit 3s to extend the lead to 33-15 with eight minutes to go.

The Lady Fleet closed the first half with an 18-9 spurt behind Timmerman's two 3-pointers, closing the gap to 42-33 at halftime. Good had 14 points, six rebounds and six assists at halftime while Timmerman had 12 points.

Erskine got no closer than nine in the first minute of the second half at 44-35. Lander used a 12-2 run featuring a basket, two free throws and layup by Good to push the lead to 56-37 with 15 minutes to go. The Lady Fleet got no closer than 14 points, 56-42 at the 13:57 mark, the rest of the way.

The Lady Bearcats took their first 25-point lead with 6:57 to go on two Crouch free throws. Their largest lead was 34 points, 99-65, with 17 seconds left on a basket by Norman.

For the game, Lander hit 38 of 78 shots from the floor, 14 of 15 from the free throw line and 9 of 20 from behind the 3-point line. Erskine made 24 of 68 shots from the floor (35 percent), 10 of 16 free throws (38 percent), and 9 of 24 from behind the arc (63 percent).
