GREENWOOD – After a scoreless first half, it took No. 20 Lander only 16 seconds to score in the second half as the Bearcats went on to beat Georgia Southwestern 3-0 Saturday in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match.
Andres Catlla, Adam Arthur and Colin Kent scored goals for Lander, which improved to 10-2 overall and 3-2 in the PBC. Georgia Southwestern fell to 2-9 overall, 0-6 in the conference.
The Bearcats dominated the first half, out-shooting the visitors 13-6. But many shots went high and wide, then Arthur hit the post with 5:10 left. Drew Courtney missed an open goal by blasting a shot over the crossbar with 3:15 to go.
But Catlla, a junior forward entering the game for the first time at the start of the second half, scored just 16 seconds into the half on an assist from freshman Arthur. Taking a cross from Arthur, Catlla tapped the ball into the lower right corner of the net.
The score remained 1-0 until 11:28 was left in the match when Lander's Seth Addison was pulled down in the box. Arthur drilled the penalty kick over Hurricanes goalkeeper Conrad Brown's head to make it 2-0.
Kent, a senior, scored with just 13 seconds left in the game off an assist from sophomore Tyler Davis.
Georgia Southwestern had few scoring opportunities, though forward Etchu Tabe attempted seven shots and Bearcats goalkeeper Garrett Daum made a particularly nice save in the first half.
Lander out-shot the Hurricanes 27-12 and had a 9-3 edge in corner kicks. Georgia Southwestern's Brown had seven saves. Daum posted five saves, recording the shutout.
