No. 25 Lander men’s soccer downs NGCSU in PBC opener

DAHLONEGA, Ga.----Luke Ibbetson scored two goals Saturday afternoon to lead the No. 25-ranked Lander men's soccer team to a 4-2 Peach Belt Conference victory over North Georgia College & State University at the NGCSU Soccer Complex.

Lander improves to 6-1-1 overall and 1-0-0, while North Georgia drops to 3-4-1, 0-3-0.

Ibbetson, an NSCAA All-American from York, England, scored in the 19th minute to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. North Georgia tied the game up at the 34:57 mark when junior forward Jeremy Bouasy fed a ball into senior midfielder Kent Thornton who touched it to sophomore forward Kelvon Morris, who then tapped it in for his fourth goal of the season.

With the score tied after halftime, both teams fought hard for control of the match. Three minutes into the second half, LU slipped a shot into the box that ricochet off of a Saints defender and into the goal to make it a 2-1 match. The Saints responded off the foot of Morris once again as he scored his second goal of the match on a break away goal.

Both teams continued to hound each other for possession of the match until Ibbetson scored his second goal of the match in the 65th minute. The Bearcats added some insurance off of the foot of senior forward Chiddy Mgbor who chipped a shot in over the head of sophomore goalie Chapin LaChance.

LaChance ended the match with one save in the hard fought loss. LU's senior keeper Garrett Daum tallied seven saves and held the North Georgia offense at bay for much of the match.

The Saints will play again Monday as they face Oglethorpe University on the road at 4:00 p.m. The Bearcats will play Lees-McRae on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at home.
