WINGATE, N.C.----Three different players scored and the Bulldog defense dominated as Wingate improved to 5-1 on the season with a 3-0 win over Lander University in women's soccer action. The Bearcats fell to 1-3.
Wingate got the scoring started midway through the first half when senior forward Veronica Acosta intercepted a pass from a Lander defender. She had just the goalie to beat as she tallied her team high sixth goal of the season with 23:24 remaining in the half.
The score remained the same until the 72:02 mark when sophomore midfielder Lisa Service put one in the top left corner on a free kick from just outside 20 yards. The goal was the second of the year for Service.
Wingate's final goal came just seven minutes later when junior Becca Noonan netted her first career goal to give Wingate the 3-0 lead.
The Wingate defense was suffocating all day against the Bearcats, allowing just six shots. Bulldog freshman goalie Kathryn Smith had two saves to preserve the shutout.
Lander returns to action Wednesday at Newberry.
