GREENWOOD, S.C.----The No. 5-seeded North Georgia men's soccer team scored a 2-1 upset victory over No. 4 Lander in the first-round of the Peach Belt Conference tournament Wednesday night when Kelvon Morris scored the winning goal with 5:40 left in the first overtime period.
North Georgia, which improves to 10-5-2, advances to Saturday's semifinal round where the Saints will face top-seeded Clayton State at 2:30 p.m. in Morrow, Ga. Lander, which drops to 10-4-3, will learn later this week if they receive a bid to the Southeast Regional Tournament.
Chiddy Mgbor gave the Bearcats an early 1-0 lead at 15:35 when he scored on an assist from Nick Cooke. The Saints tied the game at 1-1 at 37:54 when Shawn Breinlinger headed the ball to the right side of the net on an assist from Rene Alvarez.
Morris' winning goal was assisted by Ciro Pelliccia.
North Georgia outshot the Bearcats, 14-7, and led in corner kicks, 8-6.
Lander goalkeeper Garrett Daum had eight saves, while North Georgia's Vince Neal recorded four.
