Kent, Assistant Athletics Director for Facilities, was hired as Lander's head athletic trainer in 1994.
He graduated from Appalachian State University in 1991 with a bachelor's of science degree in exercise science. In 1994, he completed his master's degree in physical education at the University of South Carolina.
Atkins served as head athletics trainer from 1994-2006, overseeing the health care needs at that time for all 11 varsity sports. He also was a clinical education instructor in the accredited athletic training major. In 2006, he became Assistant AD for Sports Medicine and Compliance, where he also certifies the eligibility of all student-athletes and coordinates rules educating and monitoring for all intercollegiate sports. In 2016, he was named Assistant Athletic Director for NCAA Compliance and Internal Operations and added duties of coordinating team travel and Deputy Title IX Coordinator for athletics. During his tenure at Lander, Kent has also served as Tournament Director for numerous NCAA regional championships at Lander.   In the fall of 2022, Kent became Assistant Athletics Director for Facilities. He is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep for the Jeff May Complex and Horne Arena. Â
In the summer of 2019, Kent received the prestigious Fred Hoover Award of Excellence, the highest honor given to athletic trainers by the South Carolina Athletic Trainers Association.  In the fall of 2023, Kent was appointed to the Board of Directors for the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. Â
He is a graduate of Athens Drive High School in Raleigh, N.C.
Kent is married to the former Ashlee Free of Greenwood, and they have three children: Laura Davis, Lake, and Anna Griffis.
