GREENWOOD – On a chilly Wednesday night at
Van Taylor Stadium in the Peach Belt Conference semifinals, the No. 2 seed Lander women's soccer team lost a 2-1 match to No. 3 seed Columbus State.
The Cougars scored two goals in the first 11 minutes but the Bearcats responded in the 33rd minute when
Ansley Morrell hit
Peyton Bibbee in-stride down the right side of the pitch.
A wide-open Bibbee beat the CSU keeper to the bottom right to trim the deficit in half;
Paige Bailey also picked up an assist on the play.
Bibbee put another shot on target with eight minutes remaining before halftime that was also saved.
The second half was a defensive stalemate with neither side having many scoring chances.
Evelyn Wright had perhaps the best Bearcat opportunity with 15 minutes to play after she blocked a CSU clear attempt and gained control of the ball.
She streaked toward the goal and got a clean left-footed shot off that was stopped successfully.
Gabby Redman had the last Lander scoring chance in the 87th minute, though her long-range shot was saved.
The Bearcats outshot the Cougars 9-8 and put five shots on net.
