Men’s Rugby Finish the Fall Season With a Win Over Augusta

GREENWOOD - The Lander University men's rugby team played a close and hard-fought match against Augusta on Saturday afternoon, coming out on top 28-22.

The try scorers were Nathan Charbonnel, William Watts, and Joshua Bryant (two tries). Charbonnel was perfect in the conversions.

In the first half, it was pretty much all the Bearcats, and in the second half, the Mad Dogs made a run for it but just came up short.

Coach Buck Billings had this to say after the match, "I was really proud of the men today. We played a very good men's club out of Augusta, and they really tested us physically. We tried to allow all our younger players and newer guys to get minutes, and it was great to watch them step up to the challenge. I'm glad we were able to end the fall season with a win and give Zachary "Zac" Banks a win for his last match in the Blue and Gold. I also want to say Zac left the jersey better than he found it; it's been great to watch him grow as both a player and a man. I also have to mention what a great day Jacob Gregory had on the pitch, he was solid with his work rate and made plays on attack and defense. Ethan Syswerda played every minute and was consistent the whole match, Charbonnel played at least three different positions and was clutch with his kicking, and lastly, freshman Asher Rogers brought some physicality and showed us what we can look forward to from him in the future."

The Bearcats will be back on the pitch in February to begin their sevens campaign.
