Men’s Rugby Secures a Big Win against No. 10 NC State

GREENWOOD - The Lander University men's rugby team faced the No. 10 NC State team at home on Saturday, Oct. 26, and came out on top, beating the Wolfpack 26-12.

It was a great senior day send-off for Zac Banks, James Borders, Andre Gonzalez, and Brad McCaslan. Unfortunately, senior Ethan Richardson had to miss for a musical performance in California.

The first half was all Bearcats, taking a 19-0 lead into the breakoff of two tries by Job Madi and a try by Banks, combined with Nathan Charbonnel's two of three conversions.

The second half started much like the first, with a quick try by Banks, making the score 26-0. The offense simmered a bit, but fortunately, the defense held and only allowed one try till the last play, giving the Bearcats the win 26-12.

"Hats off to NC State; they have a tough and physical team. They've been the team to beat in our conference the last few years, and this was a big win for us; I'm proud of the guys," said Head Coach Buck Billings. "It was good to see our attack executing the things we've been working on and to see our defense hold the line. I'm proud of our seniors and glad they got the win on their big day. We'll have our hands full Friday night when we face UNC Charlotte."

The Bearcats will travel to Charlotte, N.C., on Friday, Nov. 1, to face the Charlotte 49ers starting at 6:30 p.m.
