CONWAY, S.C. – The Lander men's rugby team earned two wins and a tie on Saturday at Coastal Carolina to finish the regular season with an unbeaten record. The Bearcats and Chanticleers tied the first match, 7-7, before Lander recorded wins of 24-10 and 24-17.

Austin Johnson try and a conversion from
Matthew Shoemaker put Lander up 7-0 in the first half of the day's first match, but Coastal answered to tie the score before the half. Shoemaker and the Bearcats kept the Chanticleers off the board in the second half as Lander held on for a tie.
Cam Smith scored his first try of the day to begin match two, but Lander trailed 10-5 at the break after a pair of Coastal Carolina tries. Darell Odle's try evened the score and Shoemaker's kick put the Bearcats back on top, 12-10. Smith helped put the match away with two more tries and Lander ended the match on a 19-0 run to win 24-10.
Coastal Carolina grabbed a 12-0 lead in match three, but Lander got on the board on the last play of the first half courtesy of a try from Shoemaker. Trailing 17-5, Lander answered again when Devin Bernhagen scooped a pass off the grass and went the distance. A Shoemaker conversion cut the deficit to five and, after winning the ball back following the ensuing kickoff, Jeremiah Rosenbrook barreled his way in for a match-tying try. Shoemaker's kick gave Lander its first lead and Eric Burkett put the match on ice with a try on the final play to give the Bearcats a 24-17 victory.
Lander will compete in the May Madness 7's National Championship in New Orleans, La., May 29-31.
