GREENWOOD – The Lander volleyball team tallied its fifth consecutive win as the Bearcats notched a 3-1 victory over Francis Marion on Senior Day at Finis Horne Arena on Saturday.
With the win the Bearcats (18-6, 7-1 PBC) hold on to their spot atop the PBC standings, while the Patriots (15-12, 2-6 PBC) remain in fifth. The Bearcats finished the home slate with a program-record .889 home winning percentage this season.
"It was a great win," said head coach Ashley White. "Super proud of our three seniors, they really showed up. Our bench was a key part of that fourth-set win. They brought the energy and the intensity and that's how we were able to come out with a 'W'."
Lander raced out to a 16-9 led in the first set and led by as many as nine en route to a first-set win. The Bearcats hit .409 in the set, posting 21 kills against just three errors. In the second set, Lander once again grabbed an early lead, but the Patriots erased a 4-0 deficit to tie the set at 7-7. With the Bearcats leading 21-20 late in the set, the teams traded the next eight points before an attack error from FMU gave Lander a 26-24 win.
Francis Marion took its first lead of the day at 5-4 in the third set and held off the Bearcats to make the score 2-1, but Lander responded in the fourth set by opening on a 6-1 run. With the Bearcats leading 22-19, Ross punctuated the win with three consecutive kills to give Lander its seventh straight win in conference play.
Ross led Lander with a career-high 27 kills in the match, while Kuenstler added a season-high 14. McManus finished with a season-high 40 digs, while Ross, Boo Luther, and Corey Nichols each contributed 15. Madilyn Reed posted her 12th consecutive double-double with 55 assists and 10 digs.
