Volleyball sweeps rival Erskine in front of record crowd

GREENWOOD – The Lander volleyball team swept rival Erskine, 25-14, 25-19, 25-16, in front of a program-record 533 fans Tuesday night in Finis Horne Arena to record its fifth consecutive win in the series.

Lander (7-1) has not suffered a loss to the Flying Fleet (4-6) since 2010. 

"First off, the atmosphere was amazing," said head coach Ashley White. "That was an incredible environment to play in. It was a great first win at home and we look to keep on going in that direction this weekend. 

Hannah Hritz and Kyra Ross paced the Bearcats offensively. Hritz recorded a team-high 15 kills with a .778 hitting percentage. Ross contributed eight kills and six digs. Madilyn Reed ran the Bearcat offense efficiently, racking up 31 assists, while Boo Luther tallied nine digs on the night.

As a team Lander hit .312 to Erskine's .092. The Bearcats also outdug the Fleet 37-25 and held a 11-4 advantage in service aces.

Leading 19-14 in set one, Boo Luther's serve rotation ignited a 6-0 Bearcat run as Lander closed the first set with a flurry to take a 1-0 lead. In set two, Lander broke open a 15-15 tie as kills from Deona Mims and Hritz capped a 4-0 spurt to give the Bearcats a lead they would not relinquish. Lander opened a 14-7 lead in set three and closed out the match with a kill from Mims. 

Lander faces West Georgia at home Friday night. Match time is set for 6:00 p.m.
