Lander opens 2018 volleyball season with three-match weekend

GREENWOOD – The Lander volleyball team is set to open its 2018 campaign this weekend in Aiken, S.C., and Augusta, Ga. The Bearcats will face Johnson C. Smith and Barry on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in Aiken before traveling to Augusta to take on Mount Olive at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.

• The Bearcats return several key contributors, including sophomore rightside Hannah Hritz and junior libero Hannah McManus. Hritz led the team with 334 kills and McManus accounted for a team-high 540 digs.

• Lander is seeking its sixth consecutive winning season. 

• Johnson C. Smith was predicted to finish sixth in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association preseason poll after a 15-9 record last season.

• Barry ranked eighth in the preseason Sunshine State Conference poll following a 10-15 record in 2017. 

• Mount Olive went 10-19 in 2017 and is predicted to finish eighth in Conference Carolinas. 

• The Bearcats went 3-1 in non-conference action in Aiken's Convocation Center last year. 

• Lander is 8-1 all-time against Johnson C. Smith, Barry, and Mount Olive. The Bearcats defeated Mount Olive 3-0 last season.
