GREENWOOD – With five returning members from the 2018-19 team, the Lander women's tennis team looks to return to postseason play in 2019-20. The team finished eighth in the Peach Belt Conference last year and secured a berth in the conference tournament before falling to top-seeded Columbus State. The Bearcats will participate in four tournaments throughout the fall season.
The Bearcats will open fall play (Sept. 7-8) with a trip to Wingate, N.C. to compete in the Wingate Invitational. Following a three-week break, the team will head to the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C. (Sept. 26-29) to compete in the Southeast ITA Regional Tournament. After another three-week break, the Bearcats will return home and host the Blue and Gold Invitational (Oct. 19-20). Lander will wrap up the fall season at home as they will host the Bearcat Invitational (Oct. 26-27).
The Bearcats will face five teams that were ranked in the final Oracle/ITA top-25 last year and two top-10 ranked teams.
Starting off the Bearcats will host Georgia Gwinnett (Jan. 21) in an exhibition match. From there the team will travel to Florence, S.C. to compete in the Florence Championships (Feb. 8-9).
In its home opener, Lander will host Queens (Feb. 13). The team will stay at home as they will host Converse and Lenoir Rhyne (Feb. 15) in a doubleheader. The team will then host Belmont Abbey (Feb. 20). The Bearcats will then hit the road as they will travel to Savannah, Ga. to take on Savannah State (Feb. 28). The team will then go to St. Augustine, Fla. to face Flagler (Mar. 1). The Bearcats will wrap up their spring break road trip at Rollins (Mar. 5).
Lander will return home as they will compete against rival Erskine (Mar. 14). The team will then take a quick nonconference road trip to Wingate (Mar. 23) and to Limestone (Mar. 25).
The Bearcats will host Georgia College (Mar. 28) to open Peach Belt Conference play. March competition ends as the team will host conference foe Augusta (Mar. 29). The team will take a break from conference play as they will host Johnson C. Smith (Apr. 1). Lander will return to conference play with back-to-back away matches as they will take on last year's No. 10-ranked North Georgia on (Apr. 4) and Young Harris (Apr. 5). Lander will return home as they will face conference foes Georgia Southwestern (Apr. 10) and last year's No. 3-ranked Columbus State (Apr. 11). The team will travel to nonconference foe North Greenville (Apr. 15). The Bearcats will conclude regular-season PBC competition at Francis Marion (Apr. 18).
The Bearcats will start postseason play at the Peach Belt Conference Tournament (April 23-26) in Florence, S.C. at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Tennis Center in pursuit of the program's first PBC Championship.
