ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. – The Lander women's soccer team came up short in the upset bid as they dropped a 3-2 decision in overtime to No. 3 Flagler on Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.
The Bearcats fall to 5-8-2 on the year and 3-5-2 in the PBC while the Saints improve to 15-0-1 overall and 9-0-1 in the PBC.
The first half would be a back and forth affair as both teams could not capitalize on scoring opportunities. Flagler would have a 7-3 shot advantage as the game would be scoreless going into halftime.
The Bearcats would quickly grab the lead as Haleigh Bollig would score off of the corner kick with only a minute into the second half. The Saints would respond in the 55th minute as Sara Sandberg would score off of the assist from Brin Wexler to tie the game at one.
In the 79th minute, Annie Habeeb would score off of the rebound to give Flagler the 2-1 lead late. With only four minutes left in the game, Emily Jermstad would attempt to cross the ball, but it would deflect off of a Saints defender and roll in the goal to tie the game at two.
The game would head to overtime as both teams could not close it out in regulation. In the middle of the first overtime period, Annie Habeeb would score her second goal of the game to give Flagler the 3-2 overtime victory.
The Saints outshot the Bearcats 19-8, while they won 14 corners compared to the Bearcats one.
Lander returns to action next Saturday as they host Georgia Southwestern on Senior Day at 7:00 pm at Van Taylor Stadium.
