GREENWOOD – Thanks to Kelcie Fisher's golden goal in the 93rd minute, the Lander women's soccer team defeated Columbus State 3-2 in overtime on Saturday evening at Van Taylor Stadium.
The Bearcats improve to 4-3-1 while the Cougars fall to 4-6-0 overall. The victory marks the first time since 2012 that the Bearcats have defeated the Cougars.
In the first few minutes of the game, both teams played tough defense as they could not get into a rhythm. In the 15th minute, the Cougars would get on the scoreboard first, thanks to a strike from Kimmy May. Seven minutes later, the Bearcats would respond as Emily Jermstad would take the assist from Devin Duhme and fire the ball in the net to tie the game at one.
Coming out of the break, both teams would continue to play each other tough as they would not allow much space. In the 58th minute, Brianna Taylor would slip past the defender and deposit the ball in the right corner to give the Bearcats the lead. The Bearcats would try to hold off a Cougar comeback but was unable to as Riley Clark would score a goal in the 74th minute to send the game into overtime.
Lander would come into the overtime period and play aggressive. This aggressiveness would prove to work as with only three minutes gone by in the overtime period Kelcie Fisher would score from 20 yards out to give the Bearcats the huge win over Columbus State.
Lander will host Columbus State at Van Taylor Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 9. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m., and the match will be live-streamed on the Lander Athletics YouTube channel.
