Lander suffers first loss of season to Wingate

GREENWOOD – The Lander women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday night at Van Taylor Stadium to Wingate 2-0.

The Bulldogs improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Bearcats fall to 2-1.

The result snapped a 10-match undefeated streak at Van Taylor Stadium that dated back to the beginning of the 2018 season.

In the 76th minute, Wingate scored its first goal of the match when Caroline Peters found the back of the net for the first time this season. The Bulldogs would double their lead in the 82nd minute as Alicia Rubio Garcia would connect on her first goal of the year.

The Bearcats would try to get back into the game but was unable to send the match into overtime.

The Bulldogs outshot the Bearcats 15-11 and won four corners compared to the Bearcats two.

Lander will hit the road for the first time this season as they will take on Limestone on Wednesday, Sept. 18. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
