Freshman Passmore scores 28 as Lander beats No. 9 Anderson 77-70

GREENWOOD – The Lander women's basketball team got 28 points from freshman Zamiya Passmore and closed the third quarter with a 13-0 run as the Bearcats beat No. 9 ranked Anderson University 77-70 Tuesday night at Horne Arena.

Lander improved to 3-1 on the season. The Trojans fell to 4-1.

Passmore made 12 of 16 shots from the floor to lead the Bearcats. She scored 12 points in the second quarter, six in the third and seven more in the fourth.

"I'm glad people are starting to see [Zamiya]," said head coach Kevin Pederson. "We feel like we've got a special player in her and I've been telling her, 'you need to tell other people you're a good player.' I thought she did a great job of that tonight."

Jessica Harris also had a big game for Lander with 12 points while leading the team with nine assists, seven rebounds and four steals.

Quin'De'Ja Hamilton added a career-high 15 points for the Bearcats. She made five of eight shots from the floor and scored eight points in the third quarter to help fuel Lander's rally.

Tabitha Dailey added nine points for the Bearcats on four of six shooting. Sarah Crews contributed nine points, five rebounds and three steals.

Lander was out-rebounded 36-23 but made 32 of 64 shots from the floor (50 percent). The Trojans hit 26 of 61 shots (43 percent).

Taylor Hair paced Anderson with 22 points on nine of 11 shooting from the floor including four of four from behind the arc while also pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Alexy Mollenhauer added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Trojans. Alexis Tate contributed 11 points while Madison Baggett added 10 points while pacing Anderson with four assists. McKenzie Gadson added eight rebounds for the Trojans.

Lander led 11-9 with 2:20 left in the opening quarter on Harris's layup. But Anderson scored the game's next 10 points, including 3-pointers by Hair and Baggett. The Trojans scored the final seven points of the first period for a 16-11 lead and finished the run up 19-11 with 9:45 left in the half.

The Bearcats rallied back, starting with Dailey's three-point play and a Crews jumper that pulled them within 19-16. Passmore's layup cut the Lander deficit to 29-27 with 4:46 to go.

Harris made a driving layup off a long outlet pass from Crews to close the Bearcats within 36-35 and they would take their first lead of the second quarter when Hamilton's steal led to Passmore's layup to make it 37-36 with 1:14 left.

After Mollenhauer made three of three free throws for a second time after being fouled from behind the arc, Dailey's layup at the buzzer pulled Lander within 40-38 at halftime.

Passmore's layup gave the Bearcats a 47-46 lead with 6:12 left in the third quarter. Anderson built a 54-49 advantage before Lander closed the third period on a 13-0 run.

Crews started the run with a 3-pointer from the left side, Harris made one of two free throws, and Passmore collected a steal and missed a layup but got her own rebound and made the second for a 55-54 advantage at the 1:50 mark.

The run continued as Hamilton made a 3 from near the top of the key and then a layup off a Harris outlet pass. Harris intercepted a pass and drove in for a layup for a 62-54 Bearcats lead going into the final period.

Passmore drew contact while making a shot in the lane and converted the three-point play, giving Lander its first double-digit lead at 69-59 with 7:32 left.

Mollenhauer's jumper pulled the Trojans within 71-64 inside the four-minute mark and Xan Rowland's 3 from the right corner cut it to 71-67 with 3:30 left.

Mollenhauer's step back 3 from the left side pulled Anderson within 73-70 with 1:50 to go.

Passmore drove into the lane and made a layup, giving Lander a 75-70 lead with 1:37 to go and then grabbed a defensive rebound off Baggett's air ball at the 1:17 mark.

The Bearcats ran several seconds off the clock in a scoreless possession and after Anderson's Rowland missed a jumper in the lane, Harris grabbed her seventh defensive rebound of the game, was fouled and made one of two free throws to make it 76-70 with 20 seconds left.

Crews then deflected the Trojans' inbounds pass into the hands of Hamilton, who was fouled and added a free throw with 15 seconds to go for the game's final point.
