Carson-Newman pulls away from No. 21 Lander in PBC/SAC Challenge

GREENWOOD – The Lander women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon as the No. 21 ranked Bearcats fell to Carson-Newman 77-69 in the third game of the PBC/SAC Challenge at Horne Arena.

Carson-Newman (2-0) won both its games in the PBC/SAC Challenge, including a victory over USC Aiken Friday night. The Eagles scored the game's final seven points Saturday to pull away from Lander.

Lander, which beat Lenoir-Rhyne Friday evening in the PBC/SAC Challenge opener, fell to 1-1.

Jessica Harris paced the Bearcats with 14 points, five assists and four steals.

Zamiya Passmore added 13 points and four assists for Lander. Tabitha Dailey also contributed 13 points while leading the Bearcats with eight rebounds.

Quin'De'Ja Hamilton added 12 points for the Bearcats, with a pair of 3-pointers in both the third and fourth quarters. Sarah Crews shared team-high honors with five assists while Miriam Recarte blocked three shots for Lander.

Addison Byrd paced the Eagles with 21 points on nine of 14 shooting from the floor while adding nine rebounds.

Kayla Marosites added a double-double for Carson-Newman with 17 points and 15 boards while blocking three shots. Harli Smith scored 12 points while Braelyn Wykle added eight points while leading the Eagles with five assists.

Carson-Newman out-rebounded the Bearcats 45-30. Lander made only 12 of 40 shots from 3-point range (30 percent).

Carson-Newman rallied from an early 9-4 deficit to take a 19-18 lead after one quarter and built its advantage to 38-28 at halftime.

The Bearcats made only 11 of 36 shots in the first two quarters (31 percent), including just four of 19 from behind the arc (22 percent). Dailey, however, hit five of her six shots in the opening half.

After the Eagles opened the second half with a basket for a 40-28 lead, Lander pulled within 42-35 behind Passmore's steal and layup and 3-pointer. The comeback continued as Hamilton's first 3 of the game pulled the Bearcats within 47-46 with 3:13 to go.

Carson-Newman went on an 11-3 run to lead 58-49 with under a minute left in the third. But Hamilton's long 3 helped Lander pull within 58-52 going into the final quarter.

Hamilton struck again with another trey, cutting the Bearcat deficit to 60-58 with 8:46 to go. A long jumper by Crews pulled Lander within 62-60.

Aniaya Jester put back her own miss as the Bearcats were within 66-63 with 5:29 left. Harris's 3 from the right corner tied the game at 66 with 4:30 to go.

After Carson-Newman scored the next four points, Hamilton hit another 3 from the left side to pull Lander within 70-69 at the 3:19 mark.

But Byrd's jumper gave the Eagles a 73-69 advantage with 2:19 left and they began to pull away.

Wykle made a pair of free throws and Smith scored inside on a put-back to extend their lead to 77-69 with under 30 seconds to go.
