Lander gets career night from Harris, rolls past UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Lander women's basketball team outscored UNC Pembroke 49-20 in the second half and got a career-high 28 points from Jessica Harris as the Bearcats turned a six-point halftime lead into an 84-49 road Peach Belt Conference win on Tuesday night.

Harris was one of three Bearcats to finish in double-figures as Mylea McKenith netted 18 points and Tabitha Dailey added 10 to help Lander (9-4, 6-1 PBC) snag its 10th win in 12 tries over the Braves (3-8, 2-3 PBC).

The Bearcats shook off a slow start, trailing 10-8 late in the first quarter before a steal and ensuing layup from Amiaya Melvins ignited an 11-0 run to help give Lander a 23-16 lead at the first break. UNC Pembroke would clamp down defensively in the second quarter, holding the Bearcats to just four points through the first five minutes of the period as Lander shot just 18.2 percent in the stanza and took a 35-29 lead into intermission.

After a basket from the Braves to begin the second half, Lander extended its lead with another 11-0 run, highlighted by six points from Dailey. The Bearcats built a 19-point lead entering the fourth quarter before Harris helped put the game out of reach, scoring Lander's first seven points in the final period and netting 12 of her 28 points in the fourth quarter.

Harris connected on five three-pointers and added six rebounds and four assists. Melvins led Lander's rebounding efforts, grabbing eight boards to go along with eight points. Lander forced 29 UNCP turnovers, turning them into 37 points. The Bearcats held the Braves to just 2-of-14 shooting from three-point range, as UNCP missed all eight of its three-point tries in the second half.

Lander takes its five-game winning streak to Flagler on Saturday afternoon for a 1:30 p.m. matchup.
