Lander downs Augusta to clinch No. 2 seed in PBC Tournament

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Lander women's basketball team used a combined 68 points from Breshay Johnson, Ariana Sanders and Destinee Langford along an impressive fourth quarter to knock off Augusta, 101-74, in the Bearcats' final regular season game on Saturday afternoon.

Lander (22-6, 17-5 PBC) tied a program record with its 17th conference win of the season and clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Peach Belt Conference Tournament. Augusta (4-22, 2-20) saw its season end with the loss.

Johnson led all scorers with 27 points, while Sanders tied her career-high with 21 points. Langford posted a season-high 20 points and Chelsea Mitchell scored 15 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the floor. Johnson, Langford and Jessica Harris each pulled down seven rebounds. Langford also added eight assists and seven steals.

Lander built a 19-10 lead late in the first quarter following a 10-0 run. The Jaguars answered with eight straight points, but buckets from Johnson and Sanders to close out the period gave Lander a 23-18 lead entering the second quarter.

Neither team lead by more than four points in the second quarter as Lander held a 40-36 point lead in the closing seconds of the half. However, Joshlyn Belcher hit a three-pointer with one second left in the period and was fouled. Belcher completed the four-point play at the line to send the teams to halftime in a 40-40 tie.

After a back-and forth third quarter, Augusta trailed 68-63 with 7:55 to play before Lander used a 19-2 run to take control of the game. The Bearcat defense shut out the Jaguars for a 2:04 stretch while putting up 14 points. In total, Lander outscored Augusta 35-13 in the final period.
