GREENWOOD – Breshay and Sannayyiah Johnson scored a combined 53 points and several Lander teammates had big games as the Lady Bearcats ran past Lees-McRae College 111-80 in a non-conference women's basketball game Monday night at Horne Arena.
Lander improved to 7-2 on the season, surpassing the 100-point mark for the fourth time in its last six games.
The Bobcats fell to 1-8.
The Lady Bearcats shot 57 percent from the floor, making 42 of 74 shots.
Breshay Johnson led all scorers with 28 points, making 10 of 14 shots from the floor and all eight of her free throw attempts while also pacing Lander with nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
Sannayyiah Johnson scored 16 of her 25 points in the fourth quarter, making seven of 12 shots from the floor and seven of 10 from the line. She made four of eight attempts from 3-point range in the game.
Jada Wallace scored 18 points, making eight of 10 shots from the floor while adding seven rebounds. Ty'Hesha Reynolds contributed 15 points while pacing the Lady Bearcats with six assists and six steals.
Mylea McKenith added 15 points for Lander, making seven of 11 shots.
The Lady Bearcats hit 22 of 30 free throws (73 percent) and five of 15 from 3-point range (33 percent) while forcing 29 turnovers.
Alexis Ammons led Lees-McRae with 20 points, Lexus Norwood added 11 points, Mackenzi Blankenship scored 10 points, Breana Hardnett scored nine points and had a game-high 11 assists, and Caitlin Brown paced the Bobcats with seven boards.
Lees-McRae also shot well, hitting 33 of 62 shots from the floor (52 percent), eight of 15 free throws (53 percent) and eight of 17 from behind the arc (47 percent) while out-rebounding Lander 36-34.
Norwood gave Lees-McRae four-point leads at 15-11 with a 3-pointer with 3:41 left in the opening quarter and 25-21 with a jumper with 36 seconds left. But Breshay Johnson scored inside and Bre Crum made a layup in the final seconds as Lander tied the game at 25-all after one period.
The Johnson and Crum buckets were the start of a 12-1 run that turned the game around. Wallace scored twice inside and Breshay Johnson and McKenith added baskets, giving the Lady Bearcats a 33-26 lead with 6:25 left in the second period.
Taylor Fluette's 3 pulled Lees-McRae within 33-29. But Lander blew the game open with a 17-3 run, including seven points by Reynolds, five by Breshay Johnson, a Sannayyiah Johnson 3, and McKenith's steal and layup as the lead extended to 50-32 with 2:38 left in the first half.
It was 57-40 at halftime.
The advantage grew to 20 points, 64-44, on McKenith's three-point play with 7:52 left in the third. Lander built its lead to 23 points on four occasions in the third, starting with Crum's layup off a Reynolds steal to make it 71-48 with 5:13 to go.
The Lady Bearcats had their first 25-point lead of the game at 80-55 on Wallace's layup with 2:11 left in the third period.
After Norwood and Hardnett made 3s to pull the Bobcats within 80-61, Breshay Johnson scored twice in the final minute to extend Lander's lead to 84-61 going into the final quarter.
Sannayyiah Johnson took over at the start of the fourth quarter, scoring 11 points in a row for Lander including four of four free throws, a steal and layup, a 3-pointer, and another fast-break basket off Wallace's steal. The last of those baskets increased the lead to 95-63 with 8:33 to go.
The Lady Bearcats passed the 100-point mark on Sannayyiah Johnson's 3, making it 102-68 with 4:35 left.
Wallace turned a steal into a layup and three-point play, and Sannayyiah Johnson added a steal and layup, building the lead to 111-76 at the two-minute mark.
