AIKEN, S.C. – The Lander softball team ended its season with a dominant sweep of in-state rival USC Aiken on Sunday afternoon, beating the Pacers 10-0 and 8-0 in a pair of five-inning games.
Lander (21-25, 6-14 PBC) surpassed the 20-win mark for the fourth consecutive season, the first time since 2003-06, while the senior class became the first since 2006 to notch 100 wins.
Brianna Surrento's sacrifice fly in the first inning of game one opened the scoring and an error and a Chandler Carey RBI single moved Lander ahead 3-0 in the second. An RBI single from Sydney Grimes put the Bearcats up 4-0 in the fourth, followed by RBI doubles from Surrento and Carey to make the score 6-0. Jace Bennefield singled home a pair of runs and Kelli McCormack capped the seven-run inning with a two-run double to extend Lander's lead to 10-0.
Ashley Vinson (8-13) limited USC Aiken (21-29, 3-17 PBC) to just two hits with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings, while USCA's Hannah Price (9-15) surrendered 10 runs on 14 hits with four strikeouts.
Surrento began the scoring in game two with an RBI single and Morgan Watson scored on an error in the second inning to double the Bearcat advantage. Watson raced home in the fourth on an infield single from McCormack to put Lander up 3-0, then drove in Abby Harris with an RBI single in the fifth inning. A two-run double from Bennefield followed before Jamie Pisel's RBI groundout and McCormack double to right field put the Bearcats ahead 8-0.
Abby Killian (12-10) scattered four hits in 4.0 innings with one strikeout, while Lexi Griffin closed her career with 1.0 scoreless inning of relief. Caroline Cockrell (12-12) allowed eight runs on 10 hits with one walk in the loss for the Pacers.
