Softball drops doubleheader to Young Harris

GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team fell to Young Harris in the final home games of the season on Friday, 5-3 and 13-2, at Doug Spears Field.

Lander (19-25, 4-14 PBC) will conclude its season Sunday with a doubleheader at USC Aiken.

Neither team crossed the plate in game one until the top of the fourth, when Young Harris (35-16, 14-5 PBC) plated four runs to take a 4-0 lead. The Bearcats answered in the bottom of the fifth when Delaney Guerrero knocked her second home run of the season over the left field wall. 

The Mountain Lions tacked on another run in the top of the sixth to moe ahead 5-1, but Lander responded with an RBI groundout from Chandler Carey and an RBI single from Kasey Rogers

The Bearcats brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of seventh, but Morgan Watson was thrown out at the plate on a single off the bat of Kelli McCormack to end the game. 

Ashley Vinson (7-13) allowed five runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts and two walks in 6.0 innings, while YHC's Nikkie Kovalsky (23-9) surrendered three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in a complete-game effort. 

In game two, the Mountain Lions took a 1-0 lead in the third inning and extended the lead with a four-run fifth. Lande answered with an RBI knock from Carey and a sacrficie fly from Rogers that scored Sydney Grimes

However, Young Harris put the game out of reach with eight runs in the sixth inning. 

Abby Killian (11-10) allowed five runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings, while Louisa Disi gave up two runs on four hits for the Mountain Lions.
