GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team split with Augusta on Senior Day at Doug Spears Field on Saturday, earning a 12-0 win in game one before falling 8-5 in game two.
The Bearcats (19-21, 4-10 PBC) broke game one open in the first inning, plating nine runs. Kelli McCormack led off the bottom of the first with a homer to centerfield and Chandler Carey's RBI single three batters later put Lander up 2-0. A single and a walk loaded the bases for the Bearcats before Ashley Vinson cleared them with a grand slam to centerfield, extending Lander's lead to 6-0. RBI singles from McCormack and Brianna Surrento later in the inning gave the Bearcats a 9-0 cushion.
Lander grew the lead to 11-0 in the second inning when Jamie Pisel came off the bench to deliver a two-out, two-run single to right field. Augusta (8-32, 2-14 PBC) notched its first hit in the third inning, but could not scratch out a run, leaving two runners aboard.
The Bearcats capped the scoring in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the fourth when Lexi Griffin, making her first career at-bat, blasted the 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run.
Ashley Vinson (7-10) held the Jaguars to a single hit in 3.0 innings with three strikeouts, while Griffin tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. Morgan Hunter (3-16) allowed seven runs on six hits while recording just one out before being lifted in the bottom of the first.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two when Surrento delivered an RBI single up the middle to score McCormack. The Bearcats pushed the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth as Haven Pesce singled home Delaney Guerrero, followed by back-to-back RBI doubles from Pisel and McCormack.
Trailing 4-0, Augusta scored its first run of the day on a solo home run in the sixth inning, then plated seven runs in the top of the seventh to build an 8-4 lead.
The Bearcats managed to cut the deficit to 8-5 on an RBI groundout from Guerrero, but Augusta held on for the victory.
Vinson (7-11) surrendered five runs on six hits, while Katy Caldwell (3-9) went the distance for the Jaguars, allowing five runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts.
Lander travels to Francis Marion on Saturday for a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
