GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team fell in a pair of Peach Belt Conference games against Georgia College, falling to the Bobcats 7-3 and 7-5 at Doug Spears Field on Sunday afternoon.
Lander (18-20, 3-9 PBC) built a 3-0 lead in game one as Chandler Carey drove in Kelli McCormack in the bottom of the first and McCormack's two-run double in the fifth put the Beacats up three. Georgia College (31-10, 9-1 PBC) stormed back in late innings, however, plating five runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to take game one.
Abby Killian (11-7) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout in 1.1 innings of relief. Kayla Price (8-1) went the distance for Georgia College, surrendering three runs on five hits with a strikeout.
The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in game two with runs in the first and second innings, but Lander responded with four runs of its own, all with two outs, in the bottom of the second. An error on a Bridgett Tierney grounder allowed Kasy Rogers to score Lander's first run of the afternoon. McCormack emptied the bases with a two-run single down the left field line and scored one batter later on Sydney Grimes' single to right field.
Georgia College would respond with three runs of its own in the third to move ahead 5-4, followed by a two-run fourth inning to build a three-run cushion.
Delaney Guerrero led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot to centerfield, her first as a Bearcat, but Lander could not complete the comeback.
Killian (11-8) allowed five runs on five hits with six strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work, while Danille Rubin (3-0) tossed 2.1 shutout innings of relief to pick up the win for Georgia College.
Lander hosts Augusta next Sunday in a PBC doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
