PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Lander softball team split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with UNC Pembroke on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Braves 6-3 before notching a 9-1 win to snap UNCP's five-game winning streak.
Lander (18-18, 3-7 PBC) took a 2-0 lead in game one as Chandler Carey singled home Kelli McCormack in the top of the first and McCormack plated Delaney Guerrero on a single in the second inning. However, UNC Pembroke (14-20, 3-7 PBC) used an RBI single and a grand slam in the third to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Bearcats pulled to within 5-3 on another RBI single from McCormack in the fourth, but the Braves tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to claim a 6-3 win.
Ashley Vinson (6-10) allowed five runs on three hits with two walks in 2.2 innings for Lander, while UNCP's Malerie Leviner (6-9) surrendered three runs on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 5.2 innings to earn the win. Tatum Brummitt picked up her third save of the season, tossing 1.1 shutout innings.
In game two, Carey again opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first inning. Brianna Surrento's sacrifice fly in the third extended the lead to 2-0 and Guerrero scored on a throwing error in the fourth to give Lander a 3-0 cushion. The Braves plated their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, but Lander responded with a five-run fifth. Carey drove in her third run of the day with a single and Guerrero's two-run double to left field put the Bearcats up 6-1. Morgan Watson followed with a single to score Carey and Guerrero before McCormack scored on another sacrifice fly from Surrento to make the score 9-1.
Abby Killian (11-6) earned the win in the circle, allowing one run on three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in 6.0 innings. Raygan Larson (4-3) gave up two runs on three hits with two walks in 2.0 innings for the Braves.
