Lander suffers sweep at Flagler in PBC opener

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Lander softball team fell in a pair of games at Flagler on Saturday afternoon as the Bearcats opened conference play with 6-2 and 1-0 losses against the Saints.

Lander (12-8, 0-2 PBC) fell behind 5-0 in game one before Brianna Surrento put the Bearcats on the board with a two-run single in the top of the fifth. However, that's all Lander would manage against Kyra Gipson (8-3), who scattered seven hits in a complete-game effort. Ashley Vinson (5-3) took the loss in the circle for Lander, allowing four earned runs on six hits in 5.1 innings.

The Bearcat out-hit the Saints (16-10, 2-0 PBC) 5-3 in game two, but a second inning homer would prove to be the difference for Flagler, as Lander stranded eight runners in the game. Abby Killian (6-3) allowed one run on three hits with seven strikeouts for the Bearcats, while Katlyn McCue (6-4) picked up the win for the Saints.

Lander travels to Newberry for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
