GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games on Saturday, falling 2-1 to Lees-McRae and 2-0 to Mars Hill on Saturday at Doug Spears Field.
Lander (12-6) fell behind 2-0 in the first inning against Lees-McRae (4-5) as the Bobcats plated a pair on a sacrifice fly and an RBI double. Lander chipped away in the bottom of the fourth when Alana Frye drove in Haven Pesce with a pinch-hit single.
However, the timely hits would not come for the Bearcats as Lander stranded multiple runners in each of the first six inning, leaving 14 aboard for the game.
Brianna Surrento (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits in just one-third of an inning. Ashley Vinson limited the Bobcats to just three hits with six strikeouts in 6.2 innings of relief. Kara Cunningham (2-3) allowed one run on 10 hits with three strikeouts and four walks in 7.0 innings to earn the win for Lees-McRae.
The Bearcats could not manage a hit in game two against Mars Hill (8-5), as the Lions plated a run in the fifth and sixth innings to seal the victory. Abby Killian (6-2) allowed just two hits and two earned runs in 7.0 innings with five strikeouts and a walk. Casey Stanek (4-2) went the distance in a no-hit victory for the Lions, striking out two and walking one.
Lander visits No. 9-ranked Florida Tech on Wednesday afternoon.
