GREENWOOD – The No. 8-ranked Lander men's tennis team continued its dominance at home with its second straight shutout at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center in a 7-0 sweep over Emmanuel on Tuesday.
Lander (6-2) won its 11th consecutive match at home and improved to 69-8 in its last 77 matches in Greenwood.
The Bearcats opened up the match with a strong effort in doubles play to take the point and a 1-0 lead over Emmanuel (1-7). The No. 3 duo of Ozan Cildir and Gabriel Balestero made quick work of the Lions with a 6-0 victory. After the top tandem of Axel Cronje and Adam Elliget seized the point with a 6-0 win, Eirik Groner and Gabriel Couto ended doubles action with a 6-3 win at No. 2.
In singles, the Bearcat took the momentum and capitalized on it, winning all 10 sets across the top five courts. Cildir was the first to finish, taking a 6-0, 6-0 win on No. 1 to give Lander a 2-0 lead. Cronje was next, taking a 6-3, 6-0 win on No. 2 to bring the Bearcats one point away from victory. Tommaso Rossin clinched the win, earning a 6-4, 6-1 victory on No. 5.
Couto added a victory on No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-0, while Philippe Courteau earned a victory via retirement on No. 6. Groner picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win on No. 3 to cap the day for the Bearcats.
Lander will be back in action on Thursday, March 14, as the Bearcats travel to USC Sumter.
