HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The No. 16-ranked Lander men's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season Wednesday night as the Bearcats fell to Coker, 1-0.
Lander (4-1-1) managed just five shots on goal against the Cobras (4-2), who held a 16-10 shot advantage for the match.
Neither club managed to find the back of the net in the first period, but Coker's goal from Lucas Miquel Castrillo in the 52nd minute proved to be the difference. Lander's best opportunity to tie the match came in the 72nd minute as the Bearcats earned a penalty kick. However, Kyle Ferguson's attempt was saved as the Cobras hung on for the win. Jacob Withers made a season-high seven saves in the loss for Lander.
The Bearcats host Francis Marion on Oct. 5 in their Peach Belt Conference opener at 7:00 p.m.
