No. 3 Lander defeats Saint Leo 2-1

GREENWOOD - The No. 3-ranked Lander men's soccer team used a second-half goal by Max McNulty as the go-ahead score in a 2-1 defeat of visiting Saint Leo on Friday night at Van Taylor Stadium.

Harry Bircumshaw and Max McNulty each netted a goal in the victory as Lander (4-0) notched its fifth consecutive home victory. The Bearcats held a 14-6 advantage in shots over Saint Leo (0-3).

The Bearcats took the lead in the 28th minute when Harry Bircumshaw tapped the ball in the net after the ball deflected off of Max Bolton. It was Bircumshaw's first career goal to put Lander on top.

Later on, in the 58th-minute freshman Max McNulty would connect on a header after receiving a beautiful pass from Oakley Hanger to give the Bearcats the 2-0 advantage.

Saint Leo would not quit as Mathias Hardy would connect on a ball in the 60th minute to cut the Bearcat lead to one.  The Bearcats defense would step up in the final minutes to preserve the win.

Next up Lander will host rival Erskine next Wednesday night for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Van Taylor Stadium.
