GREENWOOD – The No. 3-ranked Lander men's soccer team used a pair of second half goals to spark a 3-0 victory over visiting Newberry Wednesday night at Van Taylor Stadium.
Alistair Danjon, Kyle Ferguson, and Tom Marriott each netted a goal in the victory for Lander (3-0), which notched its seventh consecutive home victory over a non-conference opponent. The Bearcats held a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal over Newberry (2-1).
"Very pleased to get the job done," said head coach Lee Squires. "It wasn't vintage from our perspective. We need to do better defensively with our intensity and also moving the ball better to create chances in open play. Overall, job done well done and move on to Friday."
The Bearcats took the lead in the 37th minute when Harry Bircumshaw delivered a ball into the box on a set piece that found Danjon just inches away from the goal line. The freshman headed the ball home for his first career goal to put Lander on top.
Early in the second half, the Bearcats doubled their lead as Marriott created space on the right win and fired a cross in to Ferguson, who headed it into the net to give Lander a 2-0 advantage at the 52:21 mark.
In the 65th minute, Marriott put the match away as Jed Smith hurled an throw-in to Ferguson, who headed it to Marriott. The junior settled the pass with his right foot and delivered a strike past the Newberry goalkeeper to extend Lander's lead to 3-0.
Through three matches, six different Bearcats have found the back of the net. Jacob Withers made three saves on the night for his second consecutive clean sheet.
Lander hosts Saint Leo Friday night for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Van Taylor Stadium.
